The current version of this bibliography is the continuation of both Répertoire Bibliographique de la Philosophie, published quarterly since May 1934 as a supplement to the Revue néoscolastique de Philosophie (renamed Revue Philosophique de Louvain, in 1946), and of Bibliografisch Repertorium van de Wijsbegeerte, published since 1939 in Tijdschrift voor Filosofie.
From 1991 to 2008, the bibliography was a single publication with three titles: International Philosophical Bibliography - Répertoire bibliographique de la philosophie - Bibliografisch Repertorium van de Wijsbegeerte.
From 2009 this bibliography has now simply two titles: International Philosophical Bibliography - Répertoire bibliographique de la philosophie.
In 1997 the bibliographical team began to use computer technology that led to various changes in the printed form of the IPB.

This bibliography aims at listing purely philosophical publications. Therefore, scientific disciplines related to philosophy and auxiliary sciences of philosophy are not included; the increasing volume of this type of publications, plus the availability of specific bibliographical tools specialized for such disciplines and auxiliary disciplines prevents their inclusion in the bibliography. Only publications related to methods or to philosophy of the various sciences, as well as publications of a general nature treating of their objects are listed. This rule applies particularly to the following disciplines: symbolic logic, linguistics, psychology, aesthetics, and theology.
In principle, the bibliography only lists philosophical publications in the following languages: English, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Catalan, as well as Classical Greek and Latin. Publications in other languages might be listed when they include a summary in one of the languages mentioned above.

As usual, the bibliography officially counts four numbers per year, but such numbers are grouped two by two and so there are only two issues per year. Each issue lists books and articles. Each also includes an index of book reviews and an index of names.
