His thorough monograph seemingly leaves little more to be said. Decades may pass before scholars return to the topic. The long shadow fell even on the Wisconsin «History of the Crusades» which still seeks, essentially, to stich the written sources together into traditional narrative history, only to do it better. But topics such as architecture, or coins are optional extras and not much integrated into the whole picture. A thorough analysis of political and military developments is indeed the essential groundwork of most medieval history. But high politics was not the whole of life; and charters and texts are not the only witnesses to that life. Social and economic life has its own momentum and its own continuity. Its moral and spiritual aspects deserve historical study, and impose new historical disciplines. Crusades studies have become more interdisciplinary, and less monolithic. The first investigations on the aqueducts leading into the city were undertaken in 1898. However, despite of excavating the great baths and «nymphaea» at the beginning of Austrian archaeological research, between the wars and after World War 2, the Ephesian aqueducts were not studied in any further depth. Since 2001, the editor of this book has been striving towards an attempt to study the aqueducts leading to Ephesus within a comprehensive interdisciplinary project. The 12th International Symposium on the History of Water Engineering in the Mediterranean which was held by the Österreichisches Archäologisches Institut in Ephesus in October 2004, provided the opportunity to present the entire range of research results to an international forum of experts. The discussions are to initiate a further impulse and subsequently new important insights. The articles in this publication are the reports of the lectures and presentations of posters given during the symposium. They are split into ten sections. At the beginning of altogether 67 contributions, there was an opening lecture on the river-gods and their attributes on ancient coins. The first section focussed on the city of Ephesus thereby not only introducing the latest results in the research on aqueducts, but also on other current projects which stand in a particular relationship to water engineering. Ce désordre est une source d'imaginaire: en effet, la mémoire du lecteur s'ingénie à en reconstituer les thèmes par le biais des personnages notamment. La «dissémination poétique» créée paradoxalement par le regroupement métrique engendre, avec ce double mouvement de liaison et de séparation qui caractérise Catulle, une dynamique temporelle troublante. L'espace poétique fragmenté (volontairement ou non) appelle un temps unifié, les hiatus appellent les ressemblances. Dans le monde catullien, chaque étoile fait signe et cherche sa constellation. Il nous est ainsi apparu d'emblée que le travail de reprise, de retour, de ressassement même de l'écriture allait de pair avec une poétique de l'inexprimé. Qu'il s'agisse de passions lyriques ou allégoriques, l'auteur décline sa culture affective tout en cherchant des structures idéales et des styles multiples soumis aux exigences des genres. L'ellipse et la digression figurent assez bien l'insatisfaction de l'artiste face au langage explicite et au trace rectiligne; il cultive l'implicite et le détour, il détourne les signes au profit des surprises qu'ils enferment. Même pour toujours redire, il redit autrement. C'est le chatoiement du langage versicolore ou ses brusques contrastes qui l'intéressent surtout. D'où l'importance des voix différentes, des figures qui escortent chaque poème afin qu'impressions diffuses et violentes deviennent expressions stylistiques. La mimétique catullienne serre les émotions au plus près, par le dialogue notamment, mais aussi elle les place à distance grâce au tissage des images dont l'«ecphrasis» et l'allégorie sont les lieux majeurs. Ainsi la rhétorique évolutive de Catulle suit le processus des recherches stylistiques les plus personnelles: notre seconde partie tente de visiter l'atelier du poète, en considérant les aspects rhétoriques et stylistiques de son oeuvre. Parole romaine et accents italiques croisent une préciosité grecque valorisante. Catulle use d'une oralité ludique et festive, il la dote de capacités inventives nouvelles; sa parole est ouverte aussi bien aux éclats du forum qu'à la verve de l'insulte, il capte la vie des mots quotidiens et stylise les effets: il retranscrit dans les registres choisis, en fonction d'une situation, d'un contexte énonciatif fictif, les petites et grandes dramaturgies du ressenti. Le poète explore les modes d'expression pour en souligner le caractère émotionnel. Il ne les choisit pas sans leur insuffler la force d'une persuasion sensible. Catulle s'avise des charmes trompeurs et véridiques, pourtant, de la parole: le locuteur se révèle souvent grâce à ce paradoxe, avec ses manques, ses excès, hyperbole et litote réunies. Mais l'arbitre des élégances passionnelles ne serait-il pas le «carmen», ce chant fluide de la chanson éolienne qui peu à peu se ritualise dans le distique? Catulle tourne l'hexamètre vers le pentamètre, il cadre une pensée (concettisme avant l'heure?) et lui imprime un mouvement de séduction: le poète sans doute cherche à rendre désirable sa parole, il en fait un symbole sensible. Il active, pour ce faire, les ressources lexicales et rythmiques, visant une facture achevée du poème. Le poème 64, souvent analysé, figure un art inquiet qui tend à se stabiliser. Mais toujours la recherche poétique des expressions du moi se fait en dialogue double: en amont, avec les poètes grecs - Sappho, Callimaque notamment - il rassemble la violence et la grâce, son érotisme devient passion. En aval, avec les poètes de l'élégie - Properce, Tibulle, Ovide - il trace la route où s'aventurent les paradoxes du désir et les illusions du coeur, mais aussi la beauté des images. The language policies of these communities are analysed and placed within the greater socio-historical and religious context of rabbinic justifications for the use of Jewish languages, and of Yiddish in particular. Reasons for the general abandonment of Yiddish outside of the «haredi» world are also summarized and placed in juxtaposition with the Yiddish language of loyalty of the «haredim». Yiddish language and corpus planning in «haredi» schools is analysed using communal documents and newspaper articles, educational assessments of Jewish schools compiled by «Her Majesty's Inspectors», a number of interviews with communal educators, tape recordings of lessons given in Yiddish, and observations made during my own visits to «haredi» educational institutions. A significant part of this book is dedicated to the analysis of the Yiddish language itself as it is currently used in Britain. Turning to ancient Greece, three cases of human sacrifice are analysed: a ritual example, a mythical case, and one in which myth and ritual are interrelated. Owing to its high degree of kinship with German, the issue of distantiation from that language has been pervading that process of standardization. The linguistic independence of Luxembourgish from German has been cultivated by different means, as in particular the overemphasis on its Romance heritage, or the valorisation of its archaic forms. In order to lend a democratic dimension to the cultivation of that linguistic distinctness, the imagery of a Luxembourgish 'folk standard', natural and regionally inclusive, has provided the other main source of justification for the puristic choises made throughout the process of feature selection. This book attempts to shed light on the modalities of interaction between the ideology of linguistic distantiation and Luxembourg's language reality. Beside, the modalities of that interaction are placed within the wider perspective offered by the case of standard West Frisian, a linguistic entity likewise largely defined by contrast with a genetically related neighbour and H-language, i.e. Dutch. From a comparison between the practices of language codification observable in Luxembourg and West Friesland and their ideological justification, an ideal model of further standardization for Luxembourgish is tentatively sketched against the background of the current language planning activities of the Luxembourgish norm agencies. La portée de cette grammaire est triple: historique, typologique et théorique. Jusqu'à une date assez récente, les langues du Bantou des Grassfields, mal connues, étaient considérées comme non bantoues (semi-bantoues ou bantoïdes). Or, à partir des années soixante, les recherches sur la phonologie, la tonologie et le système de classification nominale de ces langues ont mis progressivement en évidence leur caractère bantou, remettant ainsi en cause leur classification génétique par rapport aux langues bantoues au sens étroit. La description du système verbal et de la syntaxe du mankon présentée ici devrait contribuer à enrichir le débat sur ce point. De même, la description de la morphophonologie - et plus particulièrement de la morphotonologie du mankon, d'une grande complexité - devrait être majeur pour la linguistique théorique. L'ouvrage comporte une introduction générale détaillée, suivie de cinq parties grammaticales. La première partie présente la phonologie du mankon. La deuxième traite de la morphophonologie segmentale et tonale. La troisième aborde le nom: classes nominales; système d'accord; dérivation verbo-nominale; syntagmes nominaux, substituts et pronoms. La quatrième examine le verbe: dérivation; conjugaisons perfective affirmative, perfective négative, imperfective affirmative et imperfective négative; auxiliaires. Enfin, la cinqième partie décrit la syntaxe: fonctions; principaux types d'énoncés; énoncés complexes; hiérarchisation énonciative. What is power? Who has it or should have it? What are the underlying reasons for this? And especially, how is this power exercised, legitimised, and accepted? The issue of power in Europe in the early modern age is all the more significant because the demarcation line between the worldly and the religious component of power is not always clearly drawn. The fact is that power can only exist in a structured context where there is a measure of approval and consensus on the way that power is constituted and exercised. It is actually about the relationship between those who have or crave power and those who find themselves in subordinate positions. Many means of persuasion are deployed in propaganda mechanisms to underscore the rightness or superiority of this relationship. The reverse side of this phenomenon is equally important: the extent to which criticism is being voiced and other opinions are being proclaimed is at least as relevant to an evaluation of the relationship between both groups, i.e. rulers and subordinates. In societies where pomp and circumstance bear the brunt of the persuasive process - since not everyone can read or write - visual elements are crucial: painting, sculpture, architecture, urban planning, court parties and ceremonies play a major role, as do all the products issued by the printing presses: tracts and pamphlets, illustrated or unillustrated. The essays in this volume deal not so much with theories of power but rather with the ways that rulers attempt to motivate the legitimation of their power and convey their own superiority, be it genuine or spurious. They focus on the persuasive production emanating from governments as well as on the reactions of other parties, which show both confirmative and contesting tendencies. The essays presented here discuss utopian thinking from 1890 until 1930. From the end of the eighteenth century, this utopian thinking developed from what can be called 'classic' utopianism into 'modern' utopianism. Utopianism unmarked by temporality made way for a tale situated in time - future time. Thus what was first regarded as merely a thought experiment gradually assumed the character of a real political programme. In their view of the new world and new people, writers, artists, architects, social reformers, cultural critics, politicians, etc., would often draw on representations already present in the culture. These could be biblical representations, such as those of the Apocalypse, Christ the Saviour and earthly paradise, or ancient myths, such as those of the Age of Gold, Arcadia, the sun-drenched world of Gnosticism and the Wagnerian mythological universe. The workshop concentrated on the following two aspects: the way in which the future Utopia and the path that would lead to its realization was given shape in the artistic field as well as in the non-artistic field, and the question to which culturally rooted concepts these representations were related. This double line of approach created the opportunity for specialized researchers from different disciplines - history, cultural history, art history, history of architecture, literary history - to discuss utopianism as it manifested itself in Europe and the United States at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. Cette méthode permet la transcription et l'analyse des polyrythmies, mais aussi des polyphonies, qu'elles soient vocales ou instrumentales. Le présent volume comprend, outre la présentation des outils méthodologiques et conceptuels, une incursion dans le temps faisant appel aux témoignages écrits (relations d'explorateurs, de voyageurs, de missionnaires) remontant jusqu'au XVème siècle.
