Le forum de Philippes occupe au coeur de la ville un espace d’environ deux hectares aménagé en deux terrasses sur les dernières pentes de l’acropole et dans la plaine, de part et d’autre du tracé urbain de la via Egnatia. Les circonstances n’ayant pas permis la publication des fouilles de 1930 à 1937, l’École française d’Athènes en a repris l’étude en 1977. Le présent volume revient sur l’histoire des fouilles, retrace les grandes étapes de la vie du forum – de sa création sous Claude à son abandon à la fin du VIe siècle – et propose une analyse minutieuse de ses ruines. Il met en lumière les conditions de sa construction, favorisée par la proximité des carrières de l’acropole mais contrainte par les ressources locales et par une trame urbaine inchangée d’origine hellénistique. Toujours reconstruit sur lui-même, le forum de Philippes illustre, à travers ses transformations, la singularité d’une place publique en Macédoine romaine.

Centrally located, the forum of Philippi occupies an area of about two hectares laid out on two terraces extending over the lower slopes of the acropolis and into the plain, on either side of the urban axis of the Via Egnatia. Since the circumstances did not allow for the publication of the excavations conducted between 1930 and 1937, the French School at Athens resumed work on the site’s study in 1977. The present volume reviews the history of those excavations, traces the main stages in the life of the forum – from its creation under Claudius to its abandonment at the end of the 6th century – and offers a detailed analysis of its remains. It highlights the conditions of its construction, facilitated by the nearby acropolis quarries yet constrained by local resources and by an unaltered Hellenistic urban layout. Constantly rebuilt upon itself, the forum of Philippi illustrates, through its successive transformations, the distinctive character of a public square in Roman Macedonia.
