This volume publishes a number of papers that were presented at the international workshop “Commonality and Diversity in the Hellenistic World”, hosted by the CReA-Patrimoine (ULB) and held at the Université libre de Bruxelles, in May 2023. Their focus is on the commonalities observed in different media and over extended geographical regions of the Hellenistic world (i.e. material “koinai”), as well as on the identified local deviations from them. By bringing together specialists on sculpture, architecture, pottery, glass and coroplastic studies, and coinage of the Hellenistic period, the current volume aspires to offer a more holistic view of this complex phenomenon. Further, by treating any “koine” as a research starting point rather than as an analytical endgame the papers included hope to hint to the sociocultural mechanisms and/or political/economic circumstances responsible for the emergence of these widespread similarities and the occasional divergences from them.
